Alabama’s persistence is paying off in the recruitment of five-star edge rusher Xavier Griffin.
Griffin, a standout at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia, is set to make his college decision Sunday at 1:45 p.m. CST. He will choose between Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, and Texas.
The Crimson Tide began making a serious push for Griffin in March 2024. Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, Griffin grew up a fan of the Tide, which made Alabama’s offer especially meaningful.
“I’ve always watched them growing up, and I’ve always been an Alabama fan,” Griffin said after receiving the offer. “Seeing it through the Nick Saban era was really special, and I know all the talent they’ve produced through the years. I believe they will continue to do that.”
Despite giving a verbal commitment to USC on June 29, Alabama never let up in its pursuit. The Tide managed to get Griffin on campus for several visits after his commitment to the Trojans. Outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson played a key role, frequently visiting Griffin in Georgia and continuing to show how much he was wanted in Tuscaloosa.
That consistent effort paid off when Griffin decommitted from USC, immediately making Alabama a top contender.
Griffin made an official visit to Alabama earlier this month, where the program’s sense of unity left a strong impression.
“I would say the brotherhood—the older guys and freshmen just took me in like I was already a part of the team,” he said.
At 6-foot-4, Griffin is a twitchy, explosive edge rusher who can cover ground from sideline to sideline. His combination of size, athleticism, and versatility allows him to impact the game both on the edge and off the ball. He prides himself on shedding blocks and closing space quickly—traits that make him a top-tier linebacker prospect.
Griffin wrapped up his junior season with 50 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and six sacks in just seven games.
