For the second straight offseason, Penn State Football head coach James Franklin is required to find a defensive coordinator.
As per reports from CBS Sports and 247 Sports, Tom Allen is anticipated to depart from Penn State to take on the role of Clemson’s defensive coordinator, following a single season in Happy Valley.
Allen, who took over for Manny Diaz when he departed to become Duke’s head coach for the 2024 season, upheld the high standard of defense that Penn State has relied on for the last ten years, aiding the Nittany Lions in reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Penn State concluded the 2024 season as the seventh-ranked defense in the country, limiting opponents to an average of 294.8 yards of total offense each game. Similarly, Allen’s team placed eighth in turnovers, averaging 1.6 each game.
Observing Allen’s lateral move is a disappointing shift regarding Penn State’s fundraising and NIL initiatives, especially if the Nittany Lions cannot outbid programs like Clemson to retain their key coaches in Happy Valley.
