Spencer Rattler is currently locked in a quarterback competition with Tyler Shough for the New Orleans Saints’ starting job. This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Rattler, who previously battled Caleb Williams for the starting role during his time at Oklahoma. That high-profile competition ultimately saw Williams take over, a situation Rattler still appears sensitive about.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, the 24-year-old didn’t shy away from defending his past performance when the Oklahoma stint came up. He pointed to the team’s success during his time as starter, before brushing off the controversy with a measured tone.
“What happened at Oklahoma, you know, it’s like ancient history at this point,” Rattler said. “At the time, we were coming off a Big 12 Championship on a 16-game win streak. And we were rolling. I think we led the conference in touchdowns, completion percentage… and yeah, whatever happened, happened. But like I said earlier, everybody has their own story. God has a plan for everybody, and that’s just how mine went.”
Spencer Rattler first gained national attention as a high school star featured on Netflix’s QB1, where his confident — and at times brash — demeanor drew criticism from viewers who saw him as arrogant. But that was years ago, and since then, Rattler appears to have matured both on and off the field.
Last season, he had an opportunity to showcase his growth when injuries sidelined Derek Carr. Rattler stepped in and started six games for the New Orleans Saints, appearing in seven total. As a rookie, he threw for 1,317 yards and four touchdowns, but also had five interceptions and completed just 57.7% of his passes — numbers that highlight both his potential and areas that still need development.
Now, with a new coaching staff led by Kellen Moore, Rattler is battling Tyler Shough for the starting job. If he wants to secure the role and lead the Saints’ offense, he’ll need to improve his accuracy and decision-making. The organization is hoping that under Moore’s guidance, either Rattler or Shough can emerge as a long-term answer at quarterback.
