The Red Sox have come to terms to re-sign right-handed pitcher Robert Stock on a minor-league deal that offers an invitation to major-league spring training, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The deal was initially disclosed by Stock’s winter ball squad in Mexico, the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, which had earlier revealed that he was heading to the United States for a medical examination.
Stock, 35, played in 10 games for the Red Sox in the shortened 2020 season due to COVID. During that time, the hard-throwing right-hander surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 16 hits, issued 10 walks, and recorded 14 strikeouts across 13 1/3 innings of relief, with opponents hitting .320 against him. That year, his fastball averaged 96.8 mph, placing him in the 93rd percentile across all of baseball, according to Baseball Savant.
A prior second-round pick from Southern California in 2009, Stock made his debut in 2018. He has since developed a 4.71 ERA (3.97 FIP) with 76 strikeouts and 40 walks in 55 appearances (72 2/3 innings) across four teams (Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, and Mets) during parts of four seasons. In 2021, he made three appearances starting for both Chicago and New York, but hasn’t played at the big-league level since.
Stock played the entire 2022 season with the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization and divided the 2023 season between the Brewers’ Triple-A team in Nashville and the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. He joined Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos in the Mexican League for the 2024 season, achieving a 3.38 ERA with 104 strikeouts and 41 walks over 19 starts (98 2/3 innings). He subsequently connected with Hermosillo and made history by becoming the first player in the team’s history to secure the pitching triple crown, as he topped the Mexican Pacific League in wins (10), ERA (1.60), and strikeouts (78) this winter.
Stock is expected to offer the Red Sox flexible pitching depth in the upper minors at the start of the 2025 season. He is among Austin Adams, Isaiah Campbell, Noah Davis, Michael Fulmer, Bryan Mata, and Wyatt Mills as non-roster pitchers attending camp in Fort Myers, starting next month.
