PFF Ranks Indiana’s Curt Cignetti Among Top 10 Head Coaches in College Football

Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus has named Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti one of the top 10 head coaches in college football heading into the 2025 season.

Pro Football Focus’ Top 10 College Football Head Coaches:

  1. Kirby Smart – Georgia

  2. Ryan Day – Ohio State

  3. Dabo Swinney – Clemson

  4. Dan Lanning – Oregon

  5. Marcus Freeman – Notre Dame

  6. Steve Sarkisian – Texas

  7. Kalen DeBoer – Alabama

  8. James Franklin – Penn State

  9. Brian Kelly – LSU

  10. Curt Cignetti – Indiana

Cignetti’s meteoric rise comes after a remarkable first season in Bloomington. Once considered a relatively unknown figure on the national stage, he led the Hoosiers to an 11-win season and a College Football Playoff berth—both program firsts. That success marked a dramatic turnaround for a team that had gone just 9-27 over the previous three seasons.

“He’s now a top-10 head coach in college football due to his magical year in Bloomington,” wrote Chadwick. “That was two wins more than Indiana’s previous program record… With plenty of star power returning, the Hoosiers have a chance to crash the playoff once again.”

Cignetti has built a reputation for fast turnarounds, previously guiding Elon and James Madison to success—including a 19-4 record in JMU’s first two seasons at the FBS level. Now at Indiana, he’s proving his formula works in the Big Ten as well.

With a veteran coaching staff and talent on both sides of the ball, the Hoosiers appear poised to continue their rise under Cignetti’s leadership.

Indiana opens the 2025 season at home against Old Dominion on Saturday, August 30. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET.
