Former Clemson Football Player Marquise Henderson Involved in Alleged Verbal Altercation Before Dismissal, Police Records Show
Former Clemson football player Marquise Henderson was reportedly involved in a serious verbal dispute with teammates just days before his dismissal from the program, according to police records.
On June 16, multiple Clemson University Police officers responded to the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex around 3:20 p.m. due to the nature of the allegations. According to the police report, Henderson allegedly threatened teammates and displayed a photo of a firearm during the incident.
However, accounts from witnesses varied. One Clemson staff member, relaying information from a student, said that Henderson—a freshman—became upset after being criticized by a teammate for missing a workout. The staff member said Henderson then threatened to “fade” (fight) the teammates and mentioned bringing his “boys” to confront them. The same account also included mention of a firearm image being shown.
A second employee, also relaying a student’s account, confirmed threats were made but did not mention any firearm image. Meanwhile, a third witness said he didn’t recall Henderson making any threats, though he did remember a photo of a gun being displayed on someone’s phone. He told police he didn’t know who had shown the image or where it originated.
There was no indication in the police report that Henderson was arrested or detained, and online court records show no charges were filed as a result of the incident.
Henderson, a midyear enrollee from Belton-Honea Path High School and a four-star recruit, was dismissed from Clemson’s football team on June 19. The university provided no specific reason for the dismissal.
“Clemson has made the decision to dismiss Marquise Henderson from its program,” the school said in a statement. “We wish him the best as he moves forward.”
Henderson, who was being developed as an offensive player, had limited participation in spring practices due to injury. After his dismissal, he entered the NCAA transfer portal. Though he initially announced a transfer to Liberty University on social media, the post has since been deleted.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is expected to address the media on July 15 during the program’s annual preseason media day.
