The 2025 season looms large for Virginia Tech football—and no one feels that pressure more than head coach Brent Pry.
Following a frustrating 6-7 campaign in 2024 that started with optimism but ended in disappointment, Pry enters a pivotal third season at the helm. While it’s unlikely his job is in immediate jeopardy unless things completely unravel, there’s no denying this year carries significant weight.
CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson recently released his ACC football coach rankings ahead of the 2025 season, and Pry took a noticeable hit. After landing at No. 11 a year ago, Pry has dropped to No. 15 out of 17 coaches. Only Virginia’s Tony Elliott and Stanford’s interim coach Frank Reich rank lower. Even first-year Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert debuts ahead of Pry.
Patterson wrote:
“Pry says this year’s squad is the closest to his vision of Virginia Tech football since he arrived in 2022. He inherited a tough roster situation, so early struggles were understandable. Still, a 16-21 overall record and frequent one-score losses have left Hokie fans wanting more. Virginia Tech hasn’t been outmatched, but the inability to close out close games remains a glaring issue.”
Indeed, finishing games has been one of the biggest challenges for Pry’s teams. Turning those narrow losses into wins could be the key to finally sparking a true turnaround in Blacksburg.
The 2025 schedule doesn’t offer much breathing room early on, with matchups against SEC opponents South Carolina and Vanderbilt in the opening weeks. A win in at least one of those games would offer much-needed momentum. But if the Hokies start 0-2, the pressure around Pry—and his future—could intensify quickly.
