The New York Yankees have calmed down following a hectic beginning to the offseason, yet several moves remain possible to enhance the roster.
While it is yet to be determined what occurs in the coming month leading up to spring training, a recent development may aid in facilitating a trade to meet New York’s most pressing requirement.
The Chicago Cubs are said to be interested in free-agent Alex Bregman, which could lead to a crowded situation in the infield lineup. Consequently, it might render a sought-after Gold Glove recipient trade-able for the Yankees.
In this hypothetical situation, Ryan Garcia from Empire Sports Media devised a simulated trade that would move infielder Nico Hoerner to The Bronx in return for three players.
Garcia suggested that the Yankees send right-handed reliever Ian Hamilton, highly regarded pitching prospect Will Warren, and right-handed prospect Cam Schlittler to acquire Hoerner.
“Securing a leading second baseman in baseball would ideally fill a significant gap in their infield, and though Nico Hoerner isn’t an exceptional hitter, he has recorded a wRC+ of 100 or higher for three consecutive seasons with an OBP of .341 in the past two years,” Garcia stated. “On defense, the Yankees would be outstanding with Hoerner playing second base, having achieved 23 OAA and 16 DRS over the past two seasons in that role.” He is an exceptionally skilled defensive player who would significantly support the pitching staff due to his outstanding range and agility on the field.
According to Jacob Zanolla of Cubs Insider, the Yankees expressed interest in Hoerner earlier this offseason.
If Bregman ends up in Chicago, Hoerner would be the perfect player for the Yankees to target. He would match their requirements for enhancing run prevention while providing the Yankees with a reliable choice towards the bottom of the lineup.
As spring training approaches, this might be worth watching closely.
