IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa safety Koen Entringer captured national attention when a highlight-reel tackle against Michigan went viral. During the 2023 Big Ten Championship, Entringer was the first player downfield on a kickoff but missed the initial tackle. Rather than giving up on the play, he sprang back up, chased down the returner, and dragged him down just shy of the end zone—a moment that perfectly captured who he is as a player and person.
Despite starting just one career game, Entringer was selected to represent Iowa at Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas. That decision, once made by head coach Kirk Ferentz and his staff, now lies in the hands of the team’s leadership group.
“We let our leadership vote on that,” Ferentz said. “It used to be the coaches, but I’ve turned it over to the players. There’s no hidden message. It’s just who they believe represents them—and I think it says a lot about Koen. He’s earned everyone’s respect. He’s got a great attitude and work ethic.”
Entringer’s impact on the program goes beyond the field. Known for his humility, relentless effort, and genuine kindness, he’s become a respected voice in the locker room. Being chosen for Media Days came as a surprise.
“It’s surreal, honestly,” Entringer said. “I look up to these guys every day, and to share the stage with them is a blessing from God. If you believe in God and trust His plan, everything will fall into place. I’m just grateful.”
Teammates say Entringer leads by example—tenacious on the field, grounded and gracious off it. He’s battled adversity, including a serious leg injury early in his career and fierce competition at his position. In an era when many players transfer at the first sign of struggle, Entringer stayed the course.
“I never thought about leaving,” he said. “I’m committed to this team. When Quinn [Schulte] came back, I knew it made us better. If I was good enough to beat him out, I would’ve. Coach [Phil] Parker is fair, and he found a way to get me on the field.
“I know most guys want to play right away, but I looked at it long-term. Playing at Iowa is a tremendous opportunity.”
Now healthy and experienced, Entringer is poised to make an even greater impact in 2025 alongside Xavier Nwankpa in the Hawkeye secondary. Whatever this season brings, Entringer is ready—mentally, physically, and spiritually.
