Ashlyn Watkins to Miss 2025-26 Season, Plans Return for 2026-27
The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team will be without forward Ashlyn Watkins for the 2025-26 season, as the rising senior announced she is stepping away from the game to focus on her personal growth and well-being. Watkins shared the news on social media, citing the need to prioritize herself, her faith, family, and community during this time. She also confirmed her intention to return to the court for the 2026-27 season.
“With everything that’s happened this year, I’m going to take some time off to focus on myself, my community, my faith, and my family, so that I can grow as an individual and attempt to master this journey of life,” Watkins wrote.
A former McDonald’s All-American, Watkins appeared in 14 games last season before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in January during a matchup against Mississippi State. She also missed the opening game of her junior year due to legal issues stemming from the offseason. Despite those setbacks, she remained an active and supportive presence on the bench throughout the year.
Now, she’s putting her health and personal development first, a decision that head coach Dawn Staley fully supports.
“Everyone in our program is valued as the whole of who they are—not just as a player or coach or staff member, and not just for the time they are on our team,” Staley said in a statement. “We will support Ashlyn as she works through getting her body and mind stronger, and we’ll be here when she’s ready to return.”
In her post, Watkins also expressed deep appreciation for the program and those who have supported her through her journey.
“I’m so grateful for my coaches, the USC medical team, my teammates, and everyone who’s supported me along the way. For now, I’ll be cheering on my team and working hard to come back even stronger in the 2026-27 season.”
Though her presence on the court will be missed, Watkins’ decision to step back and focus on healing reflects her resilience and determination. Her future with the Gamecocks remains bright as she looks ahead to a stronger return.
