As Ohio State’s training camp intensifies, several key positional battles are unfolding, but none is more critical than the quarterback competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Both signal-callers are vying for the starting job, each confident they can emerge as QB1.
The competition has been neck-and-neck since Spring practice. At times, Sayin appeared poised to secure the job with ease. Other days, Kienholz looked like the more polished option. Head coach Ryan Day continues to emphasize that consistency will be the determining factor before he names a starter.
After an impressive showing on the third day of Fall camp, Sayin might have edged ahead in this high-stakes battle. His standout performance could give him the inside track to being named the starter in a few weeks, when Day is expected to make his final decision.

From the moment he transferred to Columbus, the Buckeyes have been enamored with Sayin’s natural talent. A former five-star prospect, he possesses elite arm strength and all the tools needed to thrive at the college level. His only knock is his size, which doesn’t fit the prototypical quarterback mold.
However, throwing to weapons like Jeremiah Smith makes Sayin’s job significantly easier. Smith, widely regarded as the top player in college football, is a dynamic playmaker who elevates any quarterback under center.
While it’s still early in Fall camp, Sayin was always the presumed favorite to win the job. If his stellar performance on Saturday is any indication, he has a chance to seize control of the competition and build a lead Kienholz may find difficult to close as the preseason progresses.
