TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — For the next few weeks, armchair analysts will debate what Alabama can expect from new starting quarterback Ty Simpson.
The truth is, there’s not much film to study. The fourth-year junior has yet to start a game and has spent most of his 16 career appearances in mop-up duty. His résumé? Just 50 pass attempts — 29 completions for 381 yards, no touchdowns.
So instead of guessing his style, I asked Simpson directly: how would he describe himself?
“I feel like I’m a dual-threat guy,” he said. “I can sit in the pocket or escape and make plays. But I think an underrated part of my game is I’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’ll fight for the first down on 4th-and-3 if that’s what’s needed.
“Our receivers, our running backs, our O-line — man, they make me look good. I’ve got to give them everything I’ve got.”
Simpson called his receivers “a bunch of studs” and his offensive line “the best in the country.”
Every practice, he enters the huddle with the same promise: I’m going to go hard for you.
“We talk about being unbreakable,” Simpson said. “The only way I’m unbreakable is if we’re all unbreakable together as an offensive team.”
