Nick Saban may be retired from coaching, but he’s still offering guidance to Alabama’s young quarterbacks.
Redshirt junior Ty Simpson has been named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback for the 2025 season, his first time leading the offense. Despite being with the program for three years, Simpson has seen limited action, attempting just 50 passes and completing 29 for 167 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. On the ground, he has rushed for 130 yards and three scores on 22 carries.
As he prepares for his first career start, Simpson turned to Saban for advice on managing nerves during games.
“He was just like, ‘Hey, play within yourself. Make sure you keep your team out of negative plays, negative drives,’” Simpson said Tuesday. “He always told us if you end your drive with a kick—a PAT, a field goal, or a punt—you’re in good shape and not dead in the water. I’m taking that mindset into this season: focus on moving the ball forward and avoiding mistakes.”
It’s simple, yet sage advice for a quarterback stepping into his first start. While not necessarily groundbreaking, it’s exactly the kind of guidance an inexperienced quarterback needs when taking on the pressure of leading a team like Alabama. The job comes with immense responsibility, but Simpson doesn’t have to be a hero on every play. For a young quarterback, especially surrounded by a talented roster, avoiding mistakes can be just as important as creating highlight-reel moments.
Simpson will have the chance to put Saban’s advice into practice when the Crimson Tide open the season on the road at Florida State on Saturday.
