Quarterback Gio Lopez passed for 155 yards and a touchdown, while four different running backs combined for 148 rushing yards. On the defensive side, UNC stifled the 49ers’ ground game, holding them to just 22 yards, and capitalized on forced errors throughout.
After the final whistle, the question arose whether Belichick had received a game ball for his first college win. Senior Gavin Gibson laughed at the notion, noting that Belichick would probably have turned it down. True to form, Belichick redirected any praise to his players and staff.
“It’s really about the team,” he said. “Monday night was disappointing, but these guys bounced back—players, coaches, staff, support people—and got back to work. They were determined to have a better outcome. I’m really proud of what they did. They deserve the credit for tonight.”

Still, controversy continues to follow the Hall of Fame coach in Chapel Hill. Recent reports revealed that he has barred New England Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices. Belichick confirmed the decision, framing it as a matter of respect amid his ongoing rift with Patriots ownership.
Sources indicated that the move reflects his unwillingness to grant access to those he felt did not support him after his departure from New England.
For now, Belichick and the Tar Heels can savor a first step in the right direction. With expectations high and pressure mounting, Saturday’s victory was less about personal milestones and more about demonstrating that UNC can begin to build under his leadership.
