When Virginia Tech dismissed head football coach Brent Pry on Sept. 14, it opened a 30-day Transfer Portal window for players to explore their options. The timing was crucial for Hokies athletes: with only three games played, they could still redshirt and preserve a year of eligibility for 2026 or later.
In the aftermath of Pry’s firing, defensive linemen Keyshawn Burgos and James Djonkam — a transfer from Eastern Michigan — were absent from the team and later removed from the roster. Interim head coach Philip Montgomery declined to comment on the situation. On Thursday morning, Kolby Crawford of VTScoop reported Burgos’ next step.
Keyshawn Burgos Enters the Transfer Portal
Crawford confirmed that Burgos has entered the Transfer Portal with one year of eligibility remaining. He joins cornerback Dante Lovett, wide receiver/punt returner Tucker Holloway, and linebacker Michael Short — who transferred in from North Carolina this offseason. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Burgos leaving the door open for a potential return to Blacksburg next season remains a possibility.
The 6-foot-5 defensive lineman appeared in three games this year, recording four tackles. His final outing came against Old Dominion, just a day before Pry was dismissed. Over his Virginia Tech career, Burgos tallied 57 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
A former Virginia commit before flipping to the Hokies and Pry, Burgos’ recruitment through the portal will draw plenty of interest. Could Virginia head coach Tony Elliott circle back and try to bring him to Charlottesville for his final season? That scenario wouldn’t be surprising.
Meanwhile, Holloway and Lovett are already drawing attention in the portal and are expected to begin campus visits soon. Roster movement has been steady since Pry’s departure, but Montgomery’s focus remains on the field, where the Hokies will try to secure their third straight victory this weekend when Wake Forest visits Lane Stadium.
