Clemson junior defensive back Shelton Lewis has left the program and intends to transfer, the school confirmed to The State. According to TigerIllustrated.com, which first reported the news, Lewis plans to use a redshirt year before officially entering the transfer portal when it opens.
Lewis has appeared in just four games this season, which allows him to preserve his redshirt and retain two more years of eligibility. The strategy has become increasingly common among players who see limited playing time early in the season and want to avoid losing a year of eligibility.
Through Clemson’s first four contests, Lewis logged 49 defensive snaps, including a season-high 33 against Syracuse. Listed as the backup “Tiger” (nickelback) on this week’s depth chart, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound defender becomes the Tigers’ first player to depart the team during the 2025 season. He is also the first midseason transfer candidate for Clemson since 2022, when linebacker Sergio Allen and wide receiver Dacari Collins left the roster.
Clemson (1-3, 0-2 ACC) is coming off a bye week and will travel to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina (2-2) on Saturday at noon (ESPN). The Tigers enter the matchup as a 14-point favorite.
