The Houston Astros have reportedly finalized a major trade that will transfer closer Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs. This transaction adds to a lengthy list of actions taken by the Astros this winter.
Regrettably for Houston, none of the actions it has taken involve re-signing infielder Alex Bregman. The experienced third baseman is still a free agent.
Bob Nightengale from USA Today recently indicated that the Pressly trade will significantly influence the Astros’ offseason. Nightengale proposed that dealing Pressly was the initial move towards re-signing Bregman.
“The Houston Astros have come to a preliminary deal to send reliever Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday after Pressly officially removed his no-trade clause, allowing free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman to rejoin the Astros,” wrote Nightengale. “The Astros had to reduce payroll by trading Pressly, two senior executives informed USA TODAY Sports, in order to re-sign Bregman.
” Pressly is set to make $14 million in 2025 during the last year of his deal, and the Cubs are anticipated to cover most of the contract by sending merely a marginal prospect to Houston, which will help in re-signing Bregman.
As Nightengale points out, settling the $14 million owed to Pressly allows Houston to have more funds to enhance its proposal for Bregman.
Second baseman Jose Altuve recently indicated he might be ready to switch positions for the Astros to reintroduce Bregman.
Now that they’ve removed Pressly from their payroll, the Astros re-signing Bregman is a feasible option.
