Will there be any activity in Major League Baseball this week?
We have just a little more than two weeks until pitchers and catchers begin reporting for Spring Training. The 2025 season is not that distant now, and yet elite free agents are searching for new teams, including Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso, Jack Flaherty, Nick Pivetta, Max Scherzer, Kenley Jansen, and Carlos Estévez.
This offseason has been peculiar, characterized by substantial expenditures at certain moments—such as the New York Mets acquiring Juan Soto—and complete quiet at others.
Before long, a few of these players will discover new teams, and we can expect to hear discussions as people look to finalize deals before Spring Training.
Bregman remains the most discussed free agent and continues to be considered a match for the Boston Red Sox, though it appears less probable than it previously did. On Monday, Jon Heyman from the New York Post commented on the sweepstakes, noting that the Red Sox were one of the four teams participating.
“Heyman stated that the Astros are working to re-sign Alex Bregman.” They remain prepared to offer (at least) $156M over six years, but one reason he turned that down previously is that it represents a reduction from his $28.5M salary. It’s reported that another team is presenting six w/1st year opt-out (amount unknown). Including others such as: Cubs, (Red Sox), Tigers.
This doesn’t imply that Boston will acquire Bregman. At this stage, a change appears improbable. The Red Sox had been linked to him for weeks, with only the Toronto Blue Jays and Tigers in the mix. Currently, the Astros are back in contention and the Cubs are as well. The Red Sox might retain him until he inks a deal with another team, but it appears to be more challenging now.
