As the 2025 college football season approaches, recruiting efforts for the Class of 2026 are gaining momentum. On Friday, one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects made headlines by reopening his recruitment.
Jamichael Garrett, a four-star talent from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is currently ranked as the ninth-best player in the state. Though a Louisiana native, Garrett plays his high school football at Central High School in Oxford, Alabama—just 75 miles from Auburn.
Garrett has built an impressive high school résumé. In 2023, he posted standout numbers with 91 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one interception. The previous season, he was even more dominant, totaling 26.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one interception, and three fumble recoveries.
On Friday, Garrett announced his decommitment from Auburn with a brief but respectful message:
“BLESSED for everything the Auburn Community has done for me.”
Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports provided additional insight into Jamichael Garrett’s recruitment, noting that the 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker had been committed to Auburn since July and currently holds 33 scholarship offers.
Garrett had previously hinted that his recruitment might not be fully closed. In an interview with Chad Simmons of On3 back in April, he said:
“If anything changes, it will be before the season starts. Auburn is still the school I am committed to, but I am looking at my options and I will take visits. I want to give some of these great schools a chance since they are recruiting me so hard.”
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is entering his third season at the helm of the Tigers. So far, his tenure has been marked by inconsistency, posting an 11–14 overall record and a 5–11 mark in SEC play. The Tigers also dropped their lone bowl appearance under Freeze in the 2023 season.
As Garrett reopens his recruitment, several high-profile programs are making a strong push. Among the top contenders are Ole Miss, led by Lane Kiffin, along with Texas A&M, Miami, and LSU. Garrett is scheduled to visit Texas A&M on June 20, shortly after a weekend visit to Miami.
