Finebaum Takes Jab at Gus Malzahn Over Nick Marshall Shoutout
Former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall didn’t get the recognition he deserved—at least according to his former coach, Gus Malzahn.
On Thursday, Malzahn responded to a question posed by SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum, who asked online: “Name an athlete who never got enough recognition in their career.” Malzahn’s pick? Marshall, who led Auburn to the 2013 BCS national championship game under his leadership.
Finebaum, never one to miss a jab, couldn’t resist a swipe at Malzahn’s coaching record.
“We all got a good laugh,” Finebaum told AL.com. “If Gus hadn’t blown an 11-point halftime lead in the national championship game against FSU, he’d probably still be coaching Auburn instead of retweeting random show clips.”
Marshall, known for his dual-threat ability, passed for 1,976 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 1,068 yards and 12 more scores during Auburn’s remarkable 2013 season. That year, the Tigers began unranked but surged to a 12-2 record, culminating in a BCS national championship appearance against Florida State in Pasadena.
He followed that up by leading Auburn to an 8-5 record in 2014.
