What took place following Coby Mayo’s RBI single that ignited a benches-clearing melee on Saturday.
The Baltimore Orioles called up one of their top prospects, Coby Mayo, ahead of Saturday’s afternoon matchup against the Chicago White Sox.
In just his 22nd MLB game, Mayo finally tallied his first RBI, drilling a line drive to left field in the fourth inning. However, what happened after Ryan O’Hearn scored will overshadow Mayo’s milestone — and not in a good way.
Chicago left fielder Joshua Palacios quickly fielded the ball and threw it toward home, but with O’Hearn already scoring, third baseman Josh Rojas intercepted the throw and redirected it to second baseman Lenyn Sosa as Mayo attempted to advance.
Trapped in a rundown, Mayo retreated toward first base. Sosa tossed the ball to first baseman Miguel Vargas and stepped onto the infield grass to avoid getting in the way. Before Vargas could tag him, Mayo also veered onto the grass, collided with Sosa, and fell.
As Mayo lay on the ground, Sosa exchanged words with him. After Vargas applied the tag, Mayo argued with the umpire, claiming interference. As he walked back to the dugout, Mayo gave Sosa a shove, which triggered both benches and bullpens to clear onto the field.
The play immediately sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with White Sox fans taking to the internet to hurl a slew of unflattering names at Mayo.
Mayo, a 23-year-old infielder, is currently ranked as the No. 17 prospect in baseball and the Orioles’ No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He debuted in the majors last season, where he struggled, going just 4-for-41 (.098) over 17 games, all singles. This was only his fifth appearance in 2025, and he’s collected two singles in 15 at-bats.
It seems like frustration was boiling over for both teams in this game. While the Orioles managed to secure a 4–2 victory, they’re still sitting with only 21 wins on the season, second-worst in the American League. The White Sox, with 18 wins, are the only team trailing them.
