Tomoyuki Sugano delivered a solid seven-inning performance as the Baltimore Orioles topped the Seattle Mariners 5-1 on Tuesday night, opening a three-game series at T-Mobile Park.
Colton Cowser homered for the Orioles, who notched their fourth straight victory and seventh win in their last nine games.
Rowdy Tellez provided the lone highlight for the Mariners with a solo home run, as Seattle slipped half a game behind Houston in the AL West standings.
Sugano (5-3) was in control, allowing just one run on five hits, walking one, and striking out five. His only blemish came in the second inning, when Tellez crushed a 1-0 curveball 404 feet into the second deck’s Hit It Here Cafe to tie the game at 1-1.
Baltimore jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning, as Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, and Ryan O’Hearn all singled before Ramón Urías drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.
The Orioles reclaimed the lead in the fifth using a similar sequence — Rutschman, Henderson, and O’Hearn singled again, with O’Hearn’s hit plating the go-ahead run. The inning ended dramatically when Urías hit a line drive off Mariners starter George Kirby, striking him in the mouth after a deflection off his hand. Bleeding, Kirby exited the game after pitching five innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.
Cowser extended the Orioles’ lead to 3-1 in the sixth with a solo homer off Eduard Bazardo.
Baltimore padded its lead with two runs in the ninth off Collin Snider. Coby Mayo led off with a single, Heston Kjerstad followed with an RBI double, and Jackson Holliday added an RBI single to seal the win.
