As the Ohio State football team pushes closer to Fall camp, competition for playing time is heating up. Players are grinding to catch the attention of head coach Ryan Day, hoping to earn meaningful snaps on a team defending its national championship. For those lower on the depth chart, it’s no easy task.
Day recently announced his “Dudes of the Week” for Week 6 of offseason workouts. Among the standouts was wide receiver Brandon Inniss—a name that comes as no surprise. With Emeka Egbuka off to the NFL, Inniss is expected to take over the slot receiver role and become the team’s third receiving option.
Joining him on the list were tight end Bennett Christian and defensive end Will Smith Jr.—two players who may not be household names but are making strong impressions. Christian saw some action in run-heavy sets last season, while Smith Jr. continues to develop on the defensive line.

Christian faces an uphill climb in a crowded tight end room. With Max Klare now on the roster, Christian is unlikely to see many targets through the air. However, he could push for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart if he continues to show progress. He’ll need to fend off Will Kacmarek for that role and keep stacking strong weeks like this one to stay in the mix.
Smith Jr., on the other hand, has a clearer path to the field. Defensive end isn’t a position of strength for Ohio State heading into the season, and Smith Jr. has the talent to carve out a spot in the rotation. Continued consistency could earn him meaningful reps once the season begins.
Fall camp is just a few weeks away, and the depth chart will soon take shape. For Inniss, Christian, and Smith Jr., now is the time to prove they belong in the regular rotation—and keep giving Ryan Day reasons to trust them on Saturdays.
