The Oakland Athletics and power hitter Brent Rooker have finalized a new deal valued at $60 million for a duration of five years, sources informed ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The agreement includes a sixth-year option valued at $22 million, which may rise depending on performance. The 30-year-old designated hitter hit 39 home runs and had 112 RBI with a .293 batting average in the A’s 69-93 season last year. The A’s intended to finalize Rooker’s contract extension in early December, with general manager David Forst mentioning “positive communication” from his agent in the early talks, as reported by MLB’s Martín Gallegos. Mark Kotsay, the manager of the Athletics, indicated that the team was focusing on re-signing Rooker to a possible contract extension. “He’s quite remarkable,” Kotsay remarked about Rooker following the team’s last game of the season, according to Gallegos. “We rarely discuss the persistence in this kid’s career.” Considering the time it took him to locate a home and cement his role as a focal point in an offense, it’s truly impressive that he has managed to compile two seasons like he has. “I am eager for what lies ahead for him here.”
