The Chicago Cubs are no longer enjoying a comfortable lead in the National League Central. After holding the top spot since April 4, a red-hot 11-game win streak by the Milwaukee Brewers has pulled them into a tie with Chicago for first place.
A major reason for the Cubs’ slide has been the instability in their starting rotation. Shota Imanaga continues to shine as a legitimate playoff-caliber ace, and Matthew Boyd is building on a resurgent 2024 season. Beyond those two, however, the rotation has been shaky.
Jameson Taillon started the year strong but has struggled in recent outings and is now sidelined with an undisclosed injury. Collin Rea has delivered more subpar outings than solid ones, and the Cubs still haven’t locked down a reliable fifth starter. As a result, the front office is actively exploring trade options to reinforce the rotation.
MLB insider Jon Morosi reports that the Cubs have reached out to the Kansas City Royals regarding pitching help. “The Cubs have checked in with the Royals ahead of the trade deadline, sources say,” Morosi noted. “This is not a surprise. The Cubs need pitching; KC is more likely to move Seth Lugo … than All-Star LHP Kris Bubic.”
Seth Lugo, 35, is putting together another impressive campaign, carrying a 6-5 record with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP through 18 starts. The veteran right-hander, who earned All-Star honors in 2024, is under contract with a \$15 million player option for 2026 — though he’s widely expected to opt out after the season.
Adding Lugo would provide the Cubs with a much-needed boost at the top of their rotation, forming a formidable playoff trio alongside Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd. With the Brewers on a tear and the division race tightening, Chicago may be forced to make a move sooner rather than later.
