Beloved team owner Jim Irsay passed away last week, leaving a profound impact on the franchise and its community.
Tributes have poured in from former and current players, as well as colleagues, all expressing their condolences to Irsay’s family and honoring his legacy.
But perhaps the most heartfelt farewell came from Colts legend and current wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne.
Speaking during a press conference, an emotional Wayne broke down in tears while reflecting on Irsay’s generosity and character.
“I told the [wide receivers], a lot of y’all don’t really know him. He would’ve done anything for anybody. He would’ve given the clothes off his back,” Wayne said, via Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.
Jim Irsay had been a cornerstone of the Indianapolis Colts for over four decades, including 28 years as owner following the death of his father, Robert Irsay.
Reggie Wayne, who spent his entire 14-year NFL career with the Colts, became one of the franchise’s all-time greats, forming a legendary partnership with quarterback Peyton Manning. Since retiring, Wayne has remained a key figure in the Colts community—a role shaped in large part by Irsay’s influence on his life.
No NFL team needs extra motivation to compete at the highest level each week, but the 2025 season will carry a deeper significance for the Colts. This campaign will be about more than wins and losses—it will be about honoring a man who meant so much to the organization.
While Irsay’s tenure as owner included its share of public controversies—often tied to personal struggles—he was widely respected within the building. Known for his generosity and compassion, he consistently went above and beyond for his players, staff, and the broader Colts family.
