Carlie Irsay-Gordon, alongside her sisters Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson, prepared for years to take over their family’s business: the Indianapolis Colts. To deepen her understanding of football’s complexities, Irsay-Gordon often wore a headset during games, listening to coaches’ high-pressure, real-time communication.
“I realized I needed to learn more to assess if someone truly knows what they’re talking about,” Irsay-Gordon said, reflecting on her accelerated learning curve after the 2012 hiring of Chuck Pagano. “Being on the headset has shown me how intricate a football team’s operations are.”
At Colts games, Irsay-Gordon is a familiar sight on the sidelines, headset on, call sheet and pen in hand. Her goal isn’t to micromanage but to grasp the nuances of each play. This perspective helps her identify where adjustments or resources are needed, such as recognizing when a play’s failure stems from a coaching call rather than a player’s error. “It helps us avoid costly mistakes,” she said, recommending the practice for anyone investing heavily in coaches and GMs.
Colts coaches value her dedication. Head coach Shane Steichen praised her football acumen, noting, “She gets it. She’s hands-on and tremendous.” Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter appreciates her presence in meetings, where she asks insightful questions and shares knowledge. “She’s very knowledgeable and eager to learn more,” he said. Special teams coordinator Brian Mason respects her detailed involvement, emphasizing that she’s focused on organizational success without overstepping or micromanaging.
Like her father, the late Colts Owner Jim Irsay, who was known for his deep football knowledge and served as GM in his 20s, Irsay-Gordon has immersed herself in the sport. Her commitment to learning every facet of the game ensures she’s a vital asset to the Colts’ leadership.
