Colts’ QB Disaster Leaves Only One Move: Go Get Kirk Cousins
The preseason opener couldn’t have gone much worse for Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. Facing the Ravens, Richardson missed David Ojabo screaming off the edge, took a nasty sack, and dislocated his finger. In Year 3, that’s a mistake he simply can’t make.
Jones, meanwhile, delivered his usual brand of inefficiency—nothing catastrophic, but nothing inspiring either. The verdict? The Colts’ quarterback room is a glaring liability. And that’s a shame, because the rest of this roster is genuinely good.
GM Chris Ballard—somehow still holding his job despite years of middling results—has quietly assembled a strong supporting cast. The trenches are solid. Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., and Josh Downs are legit weapons. New defensive additions Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward shore up the secondary. Add in Tyler Warren at tight end, and Indy has the bones of a playoff team… except under center.
That’s why Kirk Cousins has to be the move. Yes, he’s not the long-term savior and he’s coming off a mixed 2024 in Atlanta. But he’s also healthy, one year removed from Achilles surgery, and in the last four seasons has posted 98 touchdowns, 42 picks, and a 96.4 passer rating. That’s stability the Colts desperately need.
A deal sending Richardson to Atlanta for Cousins could benefit both sides—the Falcons get a young QB to develop, and the Colts get a proven veteran who can keep them in the AFC South hunt.
Indianapolis can’t keep hoping for growth that isn’t coming. It’s time to rip the Band-Aid off, admit the quarterback experiment has failed, and make the trade that could save their season.
