Colts Issue Update on Anthony Richardson’s Shoulder Injury Setback

The Indianapolis Colts are facing a setback in their quarterback competition as rising star Anthony Richardson has aggravated the same shoulder injury that cut his rookie season short.

Head coach Shane Steichen told reporters that Richardson experienced soreness in his right shoulder following a recent OTA practice. Medical tests confirmed he had re-aggravated the AC joint sprain he suffered in 2023 — the same injury that led to season-ending surgery and limited him to just four games that year.

As a result, Richardson will miss next week’s three-day mandatory minicamp. Steichen emphasized there’s no current plan for additional surgery, but the team is being cautious with his return.

> “We won’t set a timeline for training camp yet,” Steichen said. “When he comes back, we’ll ease him into throwing and go from there.”

 

QB Competition Shifts Focus to Jones, Leonard

With Richardson sidelined, the Colts will pivot their quarterback reps in OTAs to veteran free-agent addition Daniel Jones and sixth-round rookie Riley Leonard. Second-year QB Jason Bean also remains on the 90-man offseason roster.

Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, was expected to compete with Jones for the starting job this offseason. However, injuries have already caused him to miss 17 games over two seasons, raising concerns about his long-term durability.

According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, this new setback complicates Richardson’s chances to reclaim the starting role:

> “The news is a major setback for Richardson,” Holder wrote. “He’s already missed significant time, and this injury only adds to the uncertainty.”

 

Colts’ QB Plan in Flux

The Colts signed Jones to a one-year deal in 2025 not only as a potential starter but as insurance in case Richardson’s health remained an issue. With training camp starting July 22, Richardson still has time to recover and re-enter the competition — but another delay or a need for further surgery could force the Colts to move forward with Jones.
