The Milwaukee Bucks are heading into a pivotal offseason after another disappointing early playoff exit. Much of their summer strategy hinges on the future of franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Speculation continues around the league that Antetokounmpo could eventually request a trade, driven by concerns over the team’s long-term competitiveness. However, no official request has been made, and until it is, Milwaukee plans to move forward with him at the center of their plans.
Beyond Antetokounmpo, the Bucks face decisions with several key players set to hit free agency—including forward Bobby Portis, who holds a $13.4 million player option for next season.
There had been widespread belief that Portis might decline the option to test free agency, especially given his strong contributions in recent years. But a new report from Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel may shift that narrative. In a Reddit AMA, Owczarski shared that Portis now appears more likely to opt in.
“I wrote early on I thought Bobby would be a S&T candidate after an opt-out. But the more I’m hearing is he may be more likely to opt in,” Owczarski said.
If Portis decides to remain under contract, it could offer Milwaukee greater flexibility. The Bucks could explore trading him as part of a roster retool or retain him as a key piece of their core.
Trade rumors already swirled around Portis at this year’s deadline, so an opt-in could simply delay a potential move rather than rule one out.
Portis remains a valuable asset, particularly for teams seeking a floor-spacing forward. Last season, he averaged 13.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 36.5% from three-point range—despite a slight dip from previous years.
While his long-term future in Milwaukee remains uncertain, a decision on Portis’ player option could bring some clarity in the coming weeks.
