Back off, Clemson!
Official visit season is heating up in the college football world, with the first major recruiting weekend of the summer taking place now. Georgia football is set to host nearly 20 top-tier recruits for official visits, aiming to land some key commitments by the end of the weekend.
Optimism is high in Athens, as one insider mentioned that seven of the prospects visiting this weekend are expected to eventually sign with Georgia. While solidifying their standing with those recruits is a priority for Kirby Smart and his staff, they’re also keeping an eye on a few prospects currently committed to other programs who will be on campus.
Tracking potential flip candidates can be exciting, but it’s also nerve-wracking when rival schools start going after Georgia’s own commits. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, one of those threats this weekend is Clemson.
Although Clemson isn’t hosting any Georgia commits, three highly coveted prospects that Georgia is actively targeting will be visiting Clemson instead of Athens this weekend.
Three Georgia targets visiting Clemson
The first is four-star running back Jae Lamar, ranked among the top 10 backs in the country. He was recently predicted to commit to Georgia, so there’s concern his Clemson visit could change the momentum.
Also visiting Clemson are two elite five-star prospects: offensive lineman Darius Gray, who already visited Georgia earlier this month, and linebacker Tyler Atkinson. Atkinson, an in-state standout and the top-ranked linebacker in the nation, is one of Georgia’s highest priorities. Although the Bulldogs are currently favored to land him, Clemson is reportedly making significant progress.
Worryingly for Georgia, Atkinson appears enthusiastic about his Clemson trip.
How these visits play out could have a major impact on Georgia’s recruiting efforts. After the weekend, it may become clear whether Clemson has taken the lead for any—or all—of these top targets.
