Georgia Football QB Battle Heating Up with Stockton Holding the Edge
The Georgia Bulldogs are deep into a fierce quarterback competition this offseason, with two key players still in the running for the starting role in Athens for the 2025 season. Veteran Gunner Stockton and redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi are both vying for the job, but recent remarks from head coach Kirby Smart suggest that one has a noticeable lead.
Although many fans already see Stockton as the likely starter, Smart emphasized during an appearance on WJOX 94.5 with Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic that the race isn’t over yet. Both quarterbacks, he says, still have a real shot.
> “It’s about who performs best and gives us the best chance to win,” Smart said in a conversation shared via DawgNation.
Smart highlighted Puglisi’s development this offseason, praising the progress the young quarterback has made. However, he also pointed out that Puglisi is still catching up in terms of experience, which is a key factor in this competition.
> “He’s a young guy who hasn’t had many meaningful reps,” Smart explained. “He missed spring last year, and this has been his first real one. He’s learning and getting better.”
Stockton’s Experience Stands Out
So what gives Stockton the advantage? It all comes down to experience. With a few years in Georgia’s system and some on-field action under his belt from last season, Stockton brings a level of familiarity and readiness that Puglisi hasn’t yet reached. Smart acknowledged this edge and how important it is to player development.
> “That’s part of our philosophy — helping players grow over time,” Smart said. “Stockton has been in the system longer. Now Puglisi is beginning that same journey. He’ll have his shot too.”
Though Smart isn’t ready to officially name a starter — likely to keep both players pushing hard — the tone of his comments suggests Stockton is leading the way. Even though the competition is still active, Smart’s praise for Stockton makes it clear that he’s currently the frontrunner.
