Coach Deion “Prime” Sanders used a sizable portion of his weekly press conference to praise Brent Key and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Colorado’s opponent on Friday night.
Sanders began by expressing his respect for Key, who earned the permanent head coaching role at his alma mater after serving as interim. “Coaching at the school you played for has got to be incredible,” Sanders said. “He’s tough-nosed, detail-oriented. We kind of came in at the same time—he got his shot as an interim and then secured it, just like I did when I got my opportunity. I always root for guys in that position. But make no mistake, they’re going to show up and play tough.”
The Colorado coach also broke down the characteristics he expects from the Yellow Jackets. “They want to establish the run. They take care of the football and don’t beat themselves with mistakes. Defensively, they’re savvy—they’ll force you into situations you don’t want to be in. Under his leadership these past couple of years, they’ve played their butts off. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge. Brent’s one of the good guys in this business, and I’ve got a lot of admiration for him.”
At the heart of Georgia Tech’s threat is junior quarterback Haynes King, who drew high praise from Sanders for his command and consistency. “That kid is unbelievable,” Sanders said. “He doesn’t make many mistakes. He’s a winner, a leader—physical, tough, not too flashy. He just makes plays. And that alarms you, because as long as the ball is in his hands, they’ve always got a chance. That team believes in him, and that’s what you want—your guys believing in your quarterback. We’ve got to throw everything at him, all hands on deck, to try to keep him from being successful. The kid’s a dog. He can flat-out play. I love him.”
Colorado and Georgia Tech are set to kick off Friday night in Boulder, with Sanders making clear his admiration for both the coach guiding the Yellow Jackets and the quarterback driving their offense.
