THE FLATS – National recognition continued to pour in for No. 18 Georgia Tech football on Wednesday. Quarterback Haynes King (Longview, Texas/Longview H.S.) was named the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week, while defensive back Omar Daniels (Moultrie, Ga./Colquitt County H.S.) earned Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week honors, which recognizes college football’s top defensive performer each week.
King claimed the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week by winning a national fan vote over seven other Manning Award Stars of the Week. The redshirt senior totaled 314 yards of offense in Georgia Tech’s thrilling win over rival Clemson, throwing for 211 yards on 20-of-28 passing and adding a career-high 25 carries for 103 rushing yards.
He shined brightest in the fourth quarter, starting the frame with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Tech ahead 21-14. After Clemson tied the game at 21-all with just 3:26 remaining, King orchestrated the decisive drive. He accounted for 36 of the Jackets’ 38 yards on the final possession (18 passing, 18 rushing), converting two critical third downs with 9- and 4-yard keepers to set up Aidan Birr’s game-winning 55-yard field goal.
Defensive back Omar Daniels spearheaded Georgia Tech’s defensive performance with two critical takeaways in the victory over Clemson. Daniels forced a fumble in the first quarter that set up a field goal to give the Yellow Jackets an early 3-0 lead, then added a red-zone interception in the third quarter to halt a Tigers scoring threat. The redshirt senior became the first Georgia Tech player since 2017 to record both a forced fumble and an interception in the same game against an NCAA Division I FBS opponent.
King’s recognition continues a growing list of honors following Saturday’s triumph. In addition to the Manning Award accolades, he was named the Senior Bowl Offensive Player of the Week and selected to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list.
King and Daniels were also among four Jackets tabbed as ACC Players of the Week, joined by Aidan Birr (Specialist of the Week) and Keylan Rutledge (Offensive Lineman of the Week). As a team, Georgia Tech earned distinction as the Pop-Tarts Crazy Good Team of the Week.
Now 3-0 for the first time since 2016 and ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll — the Jackets’ highest national ranking since 2015 — Georgia Tech closes its three-game homestand this Saturday against Temple at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. Kickoff for the Family Weekend/First Responders Day matchup is set for 4:30 p.m. Tickets remain available.
