In a thrilling comeback, Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson smashed back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning, propelling the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon, marking their season-best sixth straight win.
Cal Raleigh, leading the majors with his 24th homer, gave the Mariners a 3-1 edge with a two-run shot in the fifth, following J.P. Crawford’s double. However, the Orioles roared back in the sixth when Jackson Holliday walked, and Rutschman’s homer, which clipped the top of the right-field wall, tied the game. Henderson then launched a go-ahead homer off Mariners starter Bryan Woo (5-3), the first time Woo allowed consecutive homers in his three-year career.
Orioles starter Zach Eflin (5-2) delivered six strong innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with a season-high seven strikeouts and no walks. Bryan Baker sealed the win with his second save, striking out Dylan Moore after a two-out single by Miles Mastrobuoni in the ninth.
Rutschman, a Portland native and Oregon State alum, shined in his Pacific Northwest homecoming, going 7-for-13 in the series, including a homer in Wednesday’s 3-2 win. The Orioles took the lead in the third when Maverick Handley scored on a wild pitch after a walk, wild pitch, and flyout. The Mariners answered in the bottom half with Raleigh’s two-out single.
Woo allowed four runs on four hits over six innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. The Mariners finished their nine-game homestand at 3-6.
