On NFL Live, Matt Hasselbeck discussed how Warren could be a valuable addition to Shane Steichen’s offense, but raised a key question: who will actually be throwing him the ball? The Colts appear to be moving on from their former first-round quarterback.
“Think about it — a year from now, we could be talking about competition for Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, or Jayden Daniels,” Hasselbeck said. “In Indianapolis, they’ve basically admitted Richardson isn’t ready as a passer. That’s why Daniel Jones is here. Tyler Warren is going to help someone — we just don’t know which quarterback yet.”
Entering the offseason openly seeking competition at quarterback, the Colts raised eyebrows across the league by signing Daniel Jones to challenge Anthony Richardson — just months after Jones was released from a massive contract by the New York Giants. While his stint in New York was largely disappointing and his brief time in Minnesota forgettable, Jones was a former high first-round pick with something to prove — and potentially more urgency than Richardson, who may feel less pressure to hold onto the job he was drafted to lead.
Will Jones win the starting job in Indianapolis? Maybe not immediately. But the more compelling question is this: if Jones does see the field, would he give the job back once Richardson is healthy or ready — or could it signal a permanent shift in Shane Steichen’s offense?
