The 29-year-old starting defensive end sustained a severe lower leg injury during last year’s training camp, just after a stellar debut season with the Colts in 2023.
In that standout campaign, Ebukam posted impressive numbers, including 57 tackles (39 solo), 10 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 48 QB pressures, 3 forced fumbles, and a pass defensed across all 17 starts.
According to PFF, he earned an overall grade of 84.4, with a standout +80.0 run defense score—highlighting his critical role in setting the edge, a factor the Colts missed in their run defense last year.
At 29, Ebukam’s recovery from a major Achilles injury will be closely watched, as similar injuries have often affected the explosiveness of other players in the past.
The Colts clearly have confidence in his recovery, as they’ve retained him for the final year of his current contract, despite a significant cap hit of \$10.49 million for the upcoming season.
As it stands, Ebukam and former first-round pick Kwity Paye are expected to start at defensive end, with second-year pro Laiatu Latu rotating in on passing downs. Rookie second-round pick JT Tuimoloau and veteran Tyquan Lewis are also in the rotation.
If Ebukam can return to his previous form, his comeback would be a major boost for the Colts.
