Changes are on the horizon for the College Football Playoff, set to be implemented ahead of the upcoming season.
The playoff format will now feature straight seeding for the 12-team field, meaning the selection committee’s top four teams will earn the No. 1 through No. 4 seeds and receive first-round byes.
As reported by ESPN, this decision was unanimously approved by the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua.
This adjustment comes just a year after the expanded playoff system was introduced.
Previously, the top four conference champions were granted the byes, but last season, each of those teams—No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Boise State, and No. 4 Arizona State—were eliminated in their first playoff game, with three suffering double-digit defeats.
It’s clear that the College Football Playoff format is still in flux. The only question now is how quickly these changes will keep coming—and just how far they’ll go.
