Kansas Guard Noah Shelby Enters Transfer Portal Under New NCAA DSA Rule
Lawrence, Kan. — Kansas men’s basketball guard Noah Shelby has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, a KU Athletics spokesperson confirmed to The Kansas City Star on Monday morning.
Shelby joined the Jayhawks ahead of the 2024–25 season as a walk-on and did not count toward the team’s scholarship limit. He redshirted this past season and retains two years of eligibility.
The timing of Shelby’s portal entry aligns with the opening of a newly established NCAA transfer window for “Designated Student Athletes” (DSAs), which began Monday and runs through August 5. This rule emerged as part of the recent House v. NCAA settlement, which also introduced new roster size limits for athletic programs.
To qualify as a DSA, an athlete must have either been removed or set to be removed from a team’s roster due to the newly imposed roster caps, and must have been part of the team during the 2024–25 season. They also must have been recruited or assured of a roster spot for the upcoming 2025–26 season.
Shelby’s departure opens up a second roster spot for Kansas heading into the 2025–26 campaign, giving head coach Bill Self additional flexibility as he finalizes his squad.
