The Michigan Wolverines have increased their competition for Hudson Hollenbeck, with former Clarion punter Hunter Robertson announcing his commitment to the program early Sunday morning.
Last season, as a sophomore at Clarion, Hunter Robertson punted 51 times for 2,201 yards, with his longest kick traveling 70 yards. He recorded 15 punts of 50 yards or more and successfully downed 17 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Besides punting, Robertson also handled kickoff duties and attempted seven field goals, converting four of them. He became Clarion’s starting punter near the end of his true freshman season in 2023.
A native of Michigan who played high school football at Berkley in metro Detroit, Robertson is the second punter from the transfer portal to commit to the Wolverines this offseason. Former Missouri punter Luke Bauer committed in the spring, but there are no signs that he has actually joined the team in Ann Arbor.
Head coach Sherrone Moore revealed at Big Ten Media Days that Hudson Hollenbeck, who started as punter in the bowl game against Alabama, is currently the frontrunner to win the job for the upcoming season.
“I think Hudson right now is in pole position to take that \[job] because of what he did in the lead up,” Moore said. “But we’ve got a couple of guys that we brought in … camp will tell a lot about who’s going to take the spot and what it’s going to look like. But \[I’m] just ready to see what happens in fall camp.”
At the very least, Robertson adds valuable depth and experience, with two seasons of eligibility remaining. With Bauer unlikely to join the team, the Wolverines were fortunate to secure another solid option this late in the offseason.
