NC State's basketball staff, riding a hot streak, has ceased pursuit of the top point guard in the transfer portal.

Barring any surprises, former Memphis star PJ Haggerty will not join NC State’s basketball backcourt next season.

On3’s Joe Tipton confirmed this weekend that NC State has stepped back from pursuing Memphis transfer PJ Haggerty after adding Darrion Williams.

Williams, a power forward from Texas Tech and the No. 6 overall transfer in this year’s portal, committed to first-year Wolfpack coach Will Wade on Thursday.

Haggerty, ranked No. 2 overall and the top point guard in the portal, seemed likely to join NC State in recent weeks. However, sources indicate he increased his NIL demands after strong performances at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago earlier this month.

National college basketball insider Adam Zagoria reported Saturday that Kansas State is now the primary school in the race to recruit the high-profile transfer.

For now, PJ Haggerty, who averaged 21.7 points per game last season at Memphis after stints at TCU and Tulsa, remains an early NBA Draft entrant. He has until 11:59 p.m. ET on May 28, 2025, to withdraw his name and preserve his college eligibility.
