The Mets have three players who could be on track for their first-ever All-Star selection this season if they maintain their strong performances.
With the calendar now flipped to May, over a month of the 2025 MLB season is already behind us. Several Mets players have stood out early on, showcasing impressive stats that may earn them a trip to the All-Star Game. While some have been here before, others are in uncharted territory, making their early-season success even more noteworthy. Among those chasing a first appearance in the mid-summer classic, their current numbers speak for themselves.
1) Tylor Megill
- Despite some ups and downs throughout his MLB career, Tylor Megill is off to a stellar start in 2025. Previously criticized for not lasting deep into games, Megill has flipped the script this year, emerging as the Mets’ No. 2 starter behind Clay Holmes as early as March.
Through seven starts so far, Megill has consistently given the Mets solid innings. The only exception came on April 9 against the Marlins, where he pitched four innings in a 5-0 shutout loss—still managing to strike out seven without allowing an earned run. In every other outing, he’s thrown at least five innings, including a season-high 6.1 innings against the Nationals on April 27.
His strikeout rate has climbed significantly, with 45 punchouts already—nearly matching his 2022 total of 51. He currently holds a 2.50 ERA, placing him in a tie for 14th in the league.
Megill’s increased consistency and effectiveness suggest that he’s turned a corner in his career. If he can sustain this pace, the right-hander may very well find himself making his All-Star debut in July—something he’s yet to experience in his five seasons with the Mets.
2) Griffin Canning
Griffin Canning has also been a standout in the Mets’ starting rotation. Signed during the offseason to bolster their pitching depth—especially with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea projected as key starters—Canning has stepped up impressively in their absence due to injuries. His performance thus far not only makes a case for a potential All-Star selection but could also earn him a permanent spot in the rotation even when the injured starters return.
Canning has matched Tylor Megill with a 2.50 ERA across seven starts, proving to be a reliable innings-eater—something he’s done well throughout his career. He’s gone at least five innings in every start except one against the Athletics, where he gave up four runs, his highest total allowed this season. A key strength of his game has been keeping opposing hitters in check, especially when it comes to home runs. In 36 innings pitched, he’s surrendered just three homers—the most recent coming in his May 5 outing against the Diamondbacks.
The Mets have come out on top in five of Canning’s seven starts, and if he continues to deliver steady outings, they’ll face a good dilemma once Montas and Manaea are healthy. His consistency, control, and ability to minimize damage make him a legitimate candidate to earn his first All-Star nod this summer.
3) Luisangel Acuña
Luisangel Acuña stands out as the lone position player on the Mets who’s making a strong case for his first All-Star appearance. A top prospect in the Mets’ system and the National League Rookie of the Month for April 2025, Acuña has impressed on both sides of the ball while filling in at second base—especially following Jeff McNeil’s injury.
At the plate, Acuña has collected 25 hits over his first 31 games of the season. While he’s only driven in three runs, he’s been a consistent presence on base and has contributed solid offense. He’s currently batting .298, which ranks second among Mets hitters, trailing only Pete Alonso’s .349 average. His performance is a continuation of his strong finish to last season, where he hit .308 and posted a .966 OPS.
Defensively, Acuña has been just as sharp, regularly making standout plays in the infield. One recent highlight came on May 4 against the Cardinals, when he made a charging play from third base and fired to first to end the inning—showcasing his range and arm strength.
If he keeps up this level of play, Acuña could easily earn a spot in the All-Star Game, marking another major milestone in his breakout season.
