A surprising development has shaken things up for UNC basketball, and fans aren’t thrilled. Earlier this spring, veteran big man Ven-Allen Lubin caught many off guard by entering the transfer portal. However, he quickly reassured Tar Heel supporters by stating his intention to return for the upcoming season.
Lately, though, speculation about his future has only grown, and now it’s taken a more serious turn. Unfortunately for UNC fans, rumors of Lubin possibly joining NC State are gaining traction. On Friday, a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction projected him to land with the Wolfpack. Could a formal announcement be just around the corner?
NC State Closing In on Flipping Ven-Allen Lubin from North Carolina
The UNC fanbase isn’t taking the latest news well—and understandably so. While nothing is official yet and Ven-Allen Lubin is still a Tar Heel, there’s growing concern he may be on the move. Some are wondering whether this is a case of an NC State insider jumping the gun.
That’s certainly possible. Lubin initially entered the transfer portal citing uncertainty tied to the NCAA House Settlement, and he made it clear that his intention was to return to Chapel Hill. Still, the growing buzz around NC State being a serious contender is raising eyebrows.
It’s been a whirlwind offseason for Hubert Davis and his staff, who have been hard at work both on the recruiting trail and in the transfer market. While top high school talent like Caleb Wilson headlines the incoming class, the Heels have also landed transfers Jaydon Young, Jarin Stevenson, Kyan Evans, Jonathan Powell, and Henri Veesaar—all expected to make key contributions.
Lubin joined UNC ahead of the 2024–25 season after previous stops at Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, averaging 8.7 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Tar Heels. If he does end up committing to NC State, it would mark his fourth school in as many years—a rare and unexpected turn in an already dramatic offseason.
