What’s in Store for UNC Basketball Next Season?

While some fans remain optimistic about the future, there’s no shortage of critics who believe Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels could be headed for another disappointing year. According to the crew at The Field of 68, Davis might find himself in hot water by the 2025–26 season.

On a recent episode of their podcast, the conversation naturally turned to the current state of the Tar Heels — and it wasn’t exactly glowing. UNC’s offseason hasn’t gone as planned, with Davis missing out on several top recruiting targets who ended up committing to other powerhouse programs. Field of 68 founder Rob Dauster didn’t mince words, calling UNC’s recent efforts “underwhelming” and voicing serious concerns about the direction of the program.

Hubert Davis Under Fire as UNC’s Offseason Moves Fall Flat

The scrutiny surrounding Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels continues to grow following what many see as a disappointing offseason. Field of 68 founder Rob Dauster was particularly critical of how UNC addressed its point guard situation, expressing concern over the team’s inability to secure a high-profile replacement for RJ Davis.

Despite reaching out to several potential targets, UNC ultimately landed Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans. With Elliot Cadeau now heading to Michigan, Evans is expected to step into the lead guard role — a move Dauster views as underwhelming.

“They ended up with Kyan Evans, and all due respect to him — he was a good player at Colorado State last year,” Dauster said. “But if you’re North Carolina, trying to replace RJ Davis, and you end up with the third-best player from Colorado State, that’s not a great sign.”

Dauster didn’t hold back on the rest of the Tar Heels’ transfer additions either, which include Jaydon Young, Jarin Stevenson, Henri Veesaar, and Jonathan Powell. The issue? None of them appear to be the kind of game-changing talent UNC needs to elevate its ceiling.

With roster holes still looming — especially on the wing — Davis and his staff are rumored to be exploring international options, while the team continues to monitor Jamir Watkins’ NBA Draft decision. Should Watkins return to college, UNC is expected to pursue him aggressively.

As things currently stand, the roster doesn’t look ready to contend for a deep March Madness run. There’s still time to add talent, but the pressure is mounting. Whether Davis can turn things around before the season tips off remains to be seen.
