The North Carolina Tar Heels endured a turbulent 2024–25 season, marked by inconsistency and mounting scrutiny. Despite making it to the NCAA Tournament, their inclusion sparked debate, as they barely secured a spot as an 11-seed.
Forced into a First Four matchup, the Tar Heels edged out San Diego State to advance to the main bracket. However, their tournament hopes were short-lived, as they fell in the first round to Ole Miss.
North Carolina ended the season with a 23–14 record, and the pressure continues to build on head coach Hubert Davis. Now holding a 101–45 record over four seasons, Davis initially captured national attention by guiding the Tar Heels to the championship game in his first year. Since then, though, the program has struggled to find consistent success, and fans are beginning to grow impatient.
But a potential turning point arrived Saturday morning—one that could reignite optimism in Chapel Hill.
Per Jonathan Givony of ESPN and DraftExpress, “Montenegrin wing Luka Bogavac has committed to North Carolina,” according to his agent Misko Raznatovic.
Jonathan Givony offered more insight into North Carolina’s newest addition, highlighting Luka Bogavac’s impressive résumé. “Bogavac was a top-5 scorer in the Adriatic League, averaging 14.9 points per game, shooting 40% from three. Turns 22 in September,” Givony noted.
The Montenegrin wing brings a mature, polished offensive game that could immediately impact the Tar Heels’ lineup. His experience playing against high-level competition overseas may be exactly what North Carolina needs to stabilize a roster in search of consistency and leadership.
Luka Bogavac’s commitment marks a significant pickup for North Carolina, especially as the program looks to reassert itself on the national stage.
Bogavac began his basketball journey with the respected Mega Basket youth system, known for developing NBA-caliber talent. He made his mark early in the 2020–21 Euroleague Basketball Next Generation Tournament, where he averaged 14.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Internationally, he’s been a steady contributor for Montenegro—posting 9.3 points per game with the U16 national team in 2019 and later helping the U20 squad secure a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships, appearing in all seven games.
For a Tar Heels team that has struggled to consistently land top-tier talent from the transfer portal, Bogavac’s arrival is timely. While returners like Henri Veesaar and Alabama transfer Jarin Stevenson offer experience and frontcourt depth, North Carolina was in clear need of a proven scorer on the wing.
Head coach Hubert Davis and his staff are banking on Bogavac to step into that role immediately. With his international experience, scoring ability, and maturity, the 22-year-old could provide the spark the Tar Heels need to turn the corner next season.
