John Mobley Jr. delivered an impressive freshman campaign, ranking among the best in program history. He averaged 13 points per game, sank 77 three-pointers across 32 games, and scored in double figures in each of his first six collegiate games.
When Meechie Johnson departed the team in December, Mobley stepped into the starting lineup with ease, providing offensive output comparable to what the Buckeyes had anticipated from the more seasoned Johnson for the full season.
However, Mobley faced stiff competition in a loaded Big Ten freshman class. His 13 points per game ranked sixth among conference freshmen, and his 38.5% three-point shooting was second only to USC’s (now Washington’s) Wesley Yates among Big Ten rookies.
In most seasons, Mobley’s performance would have secured him the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. This past year, however, he competed against standout freshmen like Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Yates, who ultimately won the honor.
Last week, Connor and Justin discussed expectations for incoming freshman A’mare Bynum this season. The reader poll showed a split, with 44% agreeing with Justin’s prediction of Bynum averaging six points and four rebounds per game. Meanwhile, 27% supported Connor’s more optimistic forecast of nine points and five rebounds per game. Another 17% believed Bynum would underperform both predictions, while 12% expected him to exceed Connor’s estimate.
