Ohio State Football Faces Genuine Quarterback Battle Between Sayin and Kienholz
With Will Howard now in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ohio State is searching for a new starting quarterback. Many assumed former five-star recruit Julian Sayin would easily claim the job. But as fall camp progresses, it’s clear that Lincoln Kienholz is firmly in the mix.
Sayin entered camp as the presumed favorite, while Kienholz was considered more of a long shot. However, recent reports suggest that the gap has narrowed. Kienholz, known for his athleticism and growing consistency, has made a strong case, turning what was expected to be a formality into a true quarterback competition.
While Sayin is widely regarded as the more naturally gifted passer, talent alone doesn’t always win starting jobs. Kienholz brings other advantages, including his size — standing at 6’3” compared to Sayin’s 6’1” — which could help reduce tipped passes at the line. He’s also the superior runner, potentially offering a new dimension to Brian Hartline’s offense if designed around his mobility and read-option potential.
It’s also possible head coach Ryan Day is creating pressure to motivate Sayin, similar to how he managed C.J. Stroud’s early development in 2021. Sayin, like Stroud, has a quieter personality, and Day may be looking for him to step up as a vocal leader who commands the huddle with consistency.
While Sayin remains the likely choice, Kienholz has made this a real competition — and if Day ultimately picks him, it’ll be because he believes Kienholz gives the Buckeyes the best chance to win. With the season approaching, the coaching staff has only a few weeks left to make that decision.
