Jake Diebler and the Ohio State basketball team are still in offseason mode. While most of next season’s roster is already taking shape, a few spots remain open for potential additions from the transfer portal. One of Diebler’s transfer targets has just re-entered the portal and is once again available.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Texas Tech transfer forward Darrion Williams has officially withdrawn from the NBA Draft after participating in the NBA Draft Combine and is now fully in the transfer portal.
Williams had a standout season for the Red Raiders, averaging 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. He elevated his game during Texas Tech’s run to the Elite Eight, averaging 21 points per game in the tournament, including a 23-point performance against eventual national champion Florida.
Jeff Goodman of Field of 68 reports that Kansas and NC State are currently the frontrunners to land the 5-star transfer, with BYU and several other programs also showing interest. However, Ohio State remains firmly in the mix and plans to continue its pursuit of Williams.
If head coach Jake Diebler can secure a commitment from Williams, it would be a significant boost for the Buckeyes. Williams is a versatile, three-level scorer who uses his size to overpower smaller defenders in the post and has a smooth mid-range game. His presence would immediately elevate Ohio State’s scoring on the wing and improve their chances of returning to the NCAA Tournament.
It won’t be an easy recruiting battle, but with Williams reportedly high on Diebler’s priority list, expect Ohio State to go all in. A final decision timeline has not yet been announced.
