Colin Simmons and the Texas Longhorns are gearing up to open the 2025 season against the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes.
Fresh off an impressive freshman campaign, Simmons quickly established himself as one of Texas’ most impactful defenders. In 16 games, he racked up 48 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, nine sacks, three forced fumbles, three pass breakups, and an interception.
Now, with the season opener just weeks away, Simmons is eager to get back on the field. Speaking with team reporter Eric Henry, the sophomore made it clear he’s ready for action.
“I’m done talking about what I’m going to do or what I want to do—it’s time to go do it,” Simmons said.

Simmons made a name for himself immediately as a freshman, earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team, becoming an All-American, and claiming the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. Now, the standout defender is eyeing an even bigger sophomore season as he builds his case as one of the nation’s premier defensive talents.
Texas enters its fifth year under head coach Steve Sarkisian, who has guided the program to a 38-17 record, including a strong 24-11 mark in Big 12 and SEC play. The Longhorns thrived in their first season as SEC members, finishing 13-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play to top the league standings. Their only blemish came in the SEC Championship Game, a 22-19 overtime loss to Georgia.
That setback didn’t derail their playoff hopes. Texas secured a College Football Playoff berth, advancing to the semifinals before falling 28-14 to the Buckeyes—who went on to defeat Notre Dame for the national title.
Now, as the preseason’s No. 1-ranked team, the Longhorns are set for a high-stakes rematch with No. 3 Ohio State. The showdown kicks off on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. ET.
