Oklahoma Sooners Target Five-Star OT Mark Matthews, a Top-15 Recruit in 2027 Class

Oklahoma Offers 2027 Five-Star OT Mark Matthews, One of the Nation’s Best

The Oklahoma Sooners have officially entered the race for one of the premier prospects in the 2027 recruiting class.

Five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews announced via social media that he has received a scholarship offer from OU—a significant move in his early recruitment.

According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, Matthews is ranked among the top eight overall prospects nationally in the 2027 cycle. He’s also considered a top-two offensive tackle in the country and the No. 1 player in Florida. The 247Sports Network’s early rankings echo that sentiment, listing him as a top-15 overall talent and a top-three offensive tackle nationwide.

Scouting Breakdown: Mark Matthews

247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins offers the following evaluation:

“An athletic offensive tackle with the size, twitch, and mobility to eventually anchor the left side of the line at the highest levels. He passes the eye test with a verified frame of 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, and is expected to grow even more, especially considering he’ll start college before turning 18.

While still raw technically, he flashes elite reactionary ability and rarely struggles with leverage. He’s quick off the snap, often balanced and in control, though he occasionally overthinks mid-play. With continued development and improved play strength, Matthews could become one of the top offensive line prospects ever to come out of South Florida. His sophomore tape and combine performances back that up.”

High School Resume & Athletic Profile

Matthews started at left tackle for Florida’s 5A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas, also contributing on defense. His defensive stats include a tackle for loss, a pass breakup, and a sack in a high-profile matchup against Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman.

A multi-sport athlete, Matthews also played a key rotational role on the St. Thomas Aquinas basketball team that won the Florida 6A state title during his sophomore year.

Recruitment Outlook

Top programs such as Miami, Florida, Florida State, and Alabama have already made early impressions in Matthews’ recruitment. Oklahoma hopes to quickly become a serious contender.

OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, who assembled a standout group in the 2025 cycle and is deep into work on 2026, has now laid the groundwork for a big 2027 cycle with this offer.
